Getting married in Cyprus as a foreign couple
You don't need to live in Cyprus to marry here, and with the express procedure it can happen within days of arriving. Here's the whole process, from picking a municipality to collecting your certificate.
The five steps
- As early as you can
Pick a municipality and a date
Any municipality's marriage office can marry you, whatever your nationality and wherever you're staying. You don't have to live in Cyprus. Book the date by phone or email: Paphos and Ierokipia both say you don't need to be there in person to reserve it.

Gather your documents
Ierokipia suggests starting two or three months ahead. You'll need passports, birth certificates and official proof that you're free to marry. Proof of marital status is only valid for three months from the date it's issued, so don't order it too early.

Ask the office to check your papers
What you need depends on your nationality, where you live and whether you've been married before. The marriage officers will tell you exactly which documents apply to you, translated into Greek or English and certified, so nothing's missing when you arrive.

Apply together, in person
Both of you visit the marriage office with your original documents, sign the joint Notice of Marriage and each declare there's no reason you can't marry. You pay on the day: €128.15 if the wedding is at least 15 days later, or €281.92 for the special procedure, which lets you marry within days. Paphos takes applications on weekday mornings from 8:30.

Marry and collect your certificate
The ceremony takes about 10 to 15 minutes, with two witnesses aged 18 or over. You get the original marriage certificate straight away. Certified copies cost extra (€15 in Paphos, €14 in Limassol), and the municipality sends one to your country's embassy or consulate in Cyprus if it has one.

Church weddings
Orthodox
A Church of Cyprus wedding is legally valid on its own, and at least one of you must be Orthodox. Each Metropolis issues its own wedding licence: the Metropolis of Constantia-Ammochostos, for example, asks for birth and baptism certificates, single-status certificates from both church and state, passports and translations into Greek or English, plus a residence permit and a civil marriage certificate from couples from outside the EU.

A Registered Minister of Religion can celebrate your civil marriage in their church, after the same application at the municipality. Otherwise, marry at the municipality first and add a church blessing. Paphos municipality lists a contact for Anglican weddings.

Cyprus has Latin Catholic parishes in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos, but we couldn't find wedding requirements online for any of them. Start with your home parish, then contact the parish in Cyprus directly.
Civil partnership
Cyprus also has civil partnerships (civil cohabitation) for any couple, same-sex couples included, registered at municipal offices. Ask your municipality whether it registers visiting couples.
